As Better Way continues to deepen our work in Indigenous early childhood development, we are really thrilled to announce that we are now supporting Weetumuw School!
Weetumuw Katnuhtôhtâeekamuq prepares students ages 3-9 for academic excellence and community leadership by instilling traditional Wampanoag values through Wôpanâak language immersion and culture. Notably, the Mashpee Wompanoag peoples were the first point of contact during colonization and the group to meet with the Pilgrims. Established in 2016, Weetumuw uses an indigenized Montessori-based pedagogy (Wampessori) that incorporates state learning standards; it immerses students in language and culture in a safe, healthy, and loving environment, with the goal to foster academic excellence, leadership skills and a strong sense of personal, community, and cultural pride. Additionally, Weetumuw is a Wildflower School—a robust, well-funded network of single site Montessori schools—which adds an additional layer of support.
